Productive or barely there – the impact presenteeism can have on your workforce

According to the 2015 Absence Management annual survey report from the CIPD, over the last year 31% of employers have reported an increase in presenteeism (also known as employees going to work when they are ill). This figure is higher in organisations where working long hours is the given and working demands take priority over employee health and wellbeing.

With the current focus on workforce wellbeing from both employers and the press, these stats are surprising. In recent years it has become a hot topic, with many employers keeping the welfare of their staff at the forefront of their minds.

Employers need to consider a proactive approach and address contributing factors at work. Implementing wellbeing focussed benefits and services to encourage employees to look after their health and offer help when they need it can go a long way. In order to appeal to the diverse needs of employees these can range from healthcare schemes to gym memberships, an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) to financial education, plus many more.

Presenteeism is a key employer consideration, people coming into work ill is not good for the individual nor the employer or other employees. Happy, healthy employees feel more motivated, loyal and engaged. An engaged workforce can have a direct impact on boosting your business outcomes. It’s time for organisations to be doing more to support their employees and look after their wellbeing. Rid your organisation of presenteeism, ensure management recognise when an employee is too unwell to work productively, and ensure your staff have enough time off to recover.
